:: Welcome to the New York Hunter and Edie's Outdoors

Care for that Mount after you come home from the taxidermy.

If your like most of us, after you get your deer or bear mount home from the taxidermy the tendencies of hanging it on the wall and forgetting it is the norm. It's not that we forget that its there because I look at mine often and reminisce the events that played out getting it too that point.

Here is the biggest pitfalls to most mounts that go bad:

 1. We take it home and mount it over the fireplace of other heat source such as heat vents. The last thing you want is any direct heat on your mount because it will cause it to dry out and start peeling over a period of time.

 2. Direct Sunlight....as much as you want everyone including yourself to see the mount clearly, keeping in in direct sunlight with the UV rays hitting it will cause damage. Try and keep it out of direct sunlight and in a shady place.

 3. Dirt, dust and smoke....all of these can and will cause your mount to look dingy. When cleaning the mount...don't brush or stroke the hair in the wrong direction, it will cause damage and fall out. Use a Q-tip with Windex around eyes to get rid of the dust, don't go overboard with the Windex. Any window cleaner can be used on the nose areas to get it looking bright again.

To clean the fur or feathers, use furniture cleaner on a rag and go in the direction of the fur or feathers. Again, don't wipe the wrong direction as it will cause damage.

 4. Insects will do the most damage to your mount. I know in my case, the taxidermy gave me some powder to use just in case. He also pointed out that he had already done a treatment to make sure it left his shop insect free. If you start to see hair falling out, cocoons in the nose or visible signs of insects, you can get the powder from your local taxidermist or simply take it back to him or her to take care of it.

You want to keep these memories going for along time and with proper care of your mount, it too will stand the test of time.
